I recently downloaded Zoom for my laptop and can't get myself ready for meetings. More specifically, I'm unable to get my camera and USB mic to work, even though I've been using these without incident on Teams and other conferencing platforms.
For instance, if I go to video settings, my camera's light is turned on, but the preview is just a black screen. Accessing these settings causes the Zoom client to hang - forcing me to choose to end task - yet my camera's light stays on, and I have to disable and re-enable the camera app from Windows settings to reset the camera.
On the audio side of things, the speakers' test works fine, but not the mics'. Testing both the built-in and USB mic yields nothing. I tried the solutions found in Zoom's knowledge base. I uninstalled and reinstalled the client, updated Windows, drivers, restarted my laptop, and checked the relevant permissions, to no avail.
I'm running Windows 10 on an HP Probook. You can fire up other video conferencing apps and check if they detect your mic. Likewise, confirm that they are correctly plugged into the appropriate ports on your computer.
You could also switch the microphone to another port on your PC or try using it on another computer. If the microphone is still not working on Zoom, refer to these troubleshooting recommendations below. If participants cannot hear you in a Zoom meeting, make sure your microphone is not muted. That should be your first course of action. Look to the bottom-left corner of the meeting window and click Unmute. When there are multiple audio devices connected to your computer, Zoom uses the mic of the active audio device.
In the meeting windows, click the arrow-up icon to the right of the Mute button and choose your preferred microphone in the Select a Microphone section. Do your coworkers often ask that you speak a little louder during Zoom meetings?
Next, click Device properties and test microphone to enter the device settings page. If the volume slider is greyed out, uncheck the Automatically adjust microphone volume option. This filters out distracting ambient noises to improve your meeting experience.

For example, you can open the Zoom app settings to check if your microphone is on before a meeting starts, so you can be ready when it does. You can try using Zoom in a quieter environment or adjusting the mic settings to suppress the background noise. Sometimes, the Zoom app for mobile phones like Androids works better with earphones.
What should you do then? If you want to make sure no other apps are using the microphone at the time, tap on the multi-task button. Close all the apps that are currently running.

The microphone stopped working on my daughter's reasonably new HP laptop in Zoom only. I checked the privacy settings and it's enabled.
